2KOHM Thin Film Resistor Network housed in a 16-pin Plastic Dual In-Line Package (PDIP).The primary architecture utilizes Precision Nichrome (Nickel-Chromium) Resistors deposited onto a Ceramic Substrate, which ensures excellent thermal tracking stability and a low voltage coefficient. The internal schematic designator "-3" specifies an isolated array network consisting of 8 completely independent, identical resistors sharing no common internal electrical bus lines. The electrical resistance value is 2 Kilohms (2kΩ) per individual resistor, controlled to an ultra-tight, factory-calibrated precision resistance tolerance of ±1% (denoted by the "F" suffix) or better. The entire multi-resistor network is shielded inside a standard 0.300-inch wide, moisture-resistant JEDEC MS-001 component block, providing a ruggedized, operational temperature range certified up to +125°C.Industry Equivalents (Cross-References)The BI Technologies / TT Electronics 6983R2KBLF serves as the exact successor component; it uses the same core factory manufacturing footprint, updated to modern lead-free/RoHS environmental specifications. The Bourns 4116R-1-202LF is a universally adopted direct industry alternative that matches the 16-pin isolated physical DIP pattern, providing matching dual-in-line trace geometry and pin configuration. The Dale / Vishay MDP1601202G acts as a high-reliability industrial substitute, mirroring the 8-isolated-element electrical schematic map and layout constraints. The CTS Electronic Components 743C083202J functions as a secondary through-hole network option, aligning directly with legacy instrumentation and analog signal board pitches.History of the ComponentThe lineage of this component belongs to Beckman Instruments Inc. (later Beckman Industrial), a legendary foundational brand in the development of American scientific instrumentation and electronic test gear components. Beckman introduced precision thin-film resistor networks to satisfy the emerging demand for matched-ratio resistor arrays inside military avionics, medical lab gear, and industrial tracking circuits.During the late 20th century, standard discrete resistors suffered from thermal drift, where separate components expanded at different rates and knocked analog signal calculations out of calibration. Beckman solved this hurdle by printing all 8 resistors simultaneously onto a single ceramic chip layout, ensuring that any ambient temperature shift would affect every internal resistor identically. In the late 1980s, Beckman's industrial components division was acquired to form BI Technologies, which itself was later absorbed into TT Electronics. While the original Beckman branding is retired, the 698-3 naming architecture remains an active historical reference footprint across custom circuit board fabrication archives.Actual Product Applications (Makes and Models)The Beckman Coulter Model J2-21 High-Speed Centrifuge relied heavily on these thin-film arrays inside its analog control logic system to precisely set and stabilize the baseline tracking speed and operational timer frequencies. The Hewlett-Packard HP 3456A Digital Voltmeter integrated these isolated 2kΩ matching networks within its primary dual-slope analog-to-digital (A/D) converter input stage to ensure drift-free voltage sampling calibration. The Tektronix 2465 Series 300MHz Oscilloscope utilized these networks directly along its internal channel preamp boards, using the tightly matched isolated resistor channels to regulate vertical gain scaling circuits.
