The 801-36C-24 (often cataloged as 801-36C24) is an exceptionally high-capacity, multi-contact General Purpose Power T-Bar Relay. The primary electrical function of this specialized electromechanical block is to act as a centralized master routing gateway, allowing an engineer to simultaneously switch a massive matrix of independent analog data, telemetry, or low-voltage power loops with a single electrical pulse. The defining characteristic of this heavy-duty component is its incredible 36PDT (36-Pole, Double-Throw) contact configuration, which lets it control 36 completely separate circuits at the exact same instant. The integrated linear magnetic actuator coil operates on a nominal input potential of 24V DC, presenting an internal coil resistance profile of 115 Ohms and drawing approximately 5 Watts of active power during operation. The internal mechanical switching contacts are manufactured from premium copper alloys and rated to safely handle switching currents up to 5 Amps at 115V AC or 28V DC.The entire assembly is built using a ruggedized, dust-tight multi-wafer stack design, routing all 36 channels out to an intricate base pin array engineered specifically to plug into high-reliability terminal sockets or to accept direct hand-soldering.Industry Equivalents (Cross-References)The Olympic Controls 801-36C24 is the active, current direct manufacturer part number, representing the primary ongoing global production standard for this specific 36-pole architectural layout. The Electronic Controls Inc. 801-36C/24 serves as the exact direct historical equivalent, identifying the identical physical component built under the previous corporate brand identity before production was consolidated. The T-Bar 801-36C-28 functions as a matching alternative variant within the same 800 Series chassis, utilizing identical 36PDT switching elements but wound with an alternative actuator coil rated for 28V DC operations.History of the ComponentThe lineage of this component belongs to T-Bar Incorporated, a highly specialized electrical engineering firm that carved out a crucial, un-clonable industry niche during the mid-to-late 20th century. Standard industrial electronics max out at 2 to 4 poles per relay. When mainframe computing grids, television broadcasting centers, or military radar stations needed to instantly transfer whole trunks of data lines to backup systems, triggering dozens of standard relays introduced dangerous timing lags and phase errors.T-Bar solved this by developing a unique linear actuator solenoid that drives a central, physical "T-Bar" plunger, allowing it to clamp down a massive stack of independent contact wafers perfectly in unison. The 800 Series was specifically optimized for higher power handling capacities (up to 5A) compared to their signal-grade 900 series. The line transitioned through acquisitions by Electronic Controls Inc. (ECI) and is currently preserved and actively manufactured by Olympic Controls. As high-speed digital packet switching and solid-state multiplexers came to dominate industrial computing in the 2000s, bulky mechanical gang-switching became an elite legacy art form. However, because physical mechanical contacts provide absolute galvanic isolation, complete immunity to cyber hacking, and a true zero-leakage physical air gap, T-Bar assemblies remain actively protected and produced to support critical aerospace, nuclear power, defense, and maritime communication trunks.Actual Product Applications (Makes and Models)The IBM System/370 Mainframe Data Centers integrated these 36-pole T-Bar relays inside their master bus switching matrices, using the massive 36PDT arrays to clean-swap active front-end processor channels over to cold-standby backup computing units during a hardware crash. The Collins Radio High-Power HF Transceiver Systems utilized these 24VDC multi-contact modules to simultaneously disconnect large multi-wire analog telemetry lines, status lamps, and control loops when changing over to alternative remote operation panels. The Grass Valley Group Model 300 Video Production Switchers regularly employed these dust-tight relays inside their core hardware racks, letting television engineers instantly swing dense, multi-channel analog video tape recorder (VTR) routing feeds without requiring manual cable patching.
