James Buchanan, distiller, decided to buy one of England’s most famous inns, the Black Swan Distillery at Holborn. He bought the property in 1898 and moved his firm moved into the building which dated back to the reign of James I and was at one time the principal coaching inn in London. The distillery achieved notoriety during the Gordon Riots in 1780, which are vividly described in Dickens’ "Barnaby Rudge." The Dickens connection is likely what suggested this Dickens souvenir produced in about 1927 when the outward appearance of the building had changed a great deal. The paintings inside the folder are by Frank Reynolds, known for his many illustrations for Dickens books that truly capture the personality of the character along with Dickens' humour. Show more
