Elia transformed his family’s century-old livestock farm into one of Montalcino’s most promising organic operations. They run in similar fashion to Val di Suga, managing just seven hectares in southwestern Montalcino, hand-harvested fruit, and aging their Sangiovese in large Slavonian oak barrels well beyond the legal requirements. This is true artisanal winemaking that honors both terroir and tradition, and in extraordinary vintages like 2019, Elia Palazzesi’s Brunello is a value in a league of its own. Don’t believe me? This was Wine Enthusiast’s only 94-point, under $40 Brunello from the famed 2019 vintage. Show more
