Gibson Custom Shop was established in 1993 to create the finest electric guitars and basses using high-quality manufacturing techniques, an insatiable spirit of inquiry, and carefully selected materials, cultivated over many years. The Custom Shop lineup, still built using traditional handcrafting methods and a thorough knowledge of vintage instruments, is unrivaled in its exquisite craftsmanship, and is sure to become the ultimate beloved instrument that will endlessly inspire the player's innermost inspiration. About Murphy Lab Murphy Lab, a new lab located within the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville, specializes in guitar aging (a process that recreates the aging look and feel of vintage guitars) using the latest scientifically-based technology. Tom Murphy, a founding member of the Gibson Custom Shop and project leader of the Historic Collection, has since developed a technique called aging, which brings a vintage look and feel to new guitars. Backed by his passion and deep knowledge of vintage guitars, Tom's techniques allow him to perfectly replicate the natural lacquer cracks and wear that come with playing a Gibson guitar. Tom Murphy and Gibson scientifically analyzed the nitrocellulose lacquers of the 1950s and 1960s, which develop cracks known as weatherchecking over time, to unravel the process of change. After extensive testing on prototypes of various models, they developed a lacquer process that reproduces the natural weatherchecking of vintage guitars. The idea for Murphy Lab was born when Tom Murphy and his team at the Gibson Custom Shop began testing prototypes with various body shapes, finishes and aging levels. As a result, Murphy Lab was established within the Gibson Custom Shop to pursue unprecedented realism and attention to detail in aging. Tom Murphy and his artistic creations have played an important role in Gibson's history and will continue to live on forever as Murphy Lab. This custom-made, Japanese-designed guitar is based on a 1957 Les Paul Custom Reissue in "Ultra Light Aged" condition, the least severe of the four aging levels. The one-piece mahogany body features a luxurious Polaris White finish, a departure from the standard Ebony Black finish. Equipped with three pickups and a Bigsby pickup, this guitar will captivate any guitar enthusiast with its vibrant aesthetic. The Ultra Light Aged model features minimal weathering and dents, giving it the natural appearance of aging, as if it had been carefully stored in a case for many years. The fingerboard edges are rolled for excellent grip, a finish that players will appreciate. The basic specs are the latest Historic Spec. It continues to feature unpotted Custombucker Alnico III pickups, an updated assembly, and True Historic parts. The '57 Les Paul Custom uses a one-piece solid mahogany body instead of maple. Combined with an ebony fingerboard, it produces a rich, edgy, high-quality humbucking sound. As for the condition of this guitar, while it's difficult to tell due to the aging process, there are some minor scratches that look new and some noticeable paint peeling on the back of the body. The frets are still about 80% tall, and there are no issues with the neck or the electrical system, so this is a guitar you can enjoy for years to come. With its impressive appearance and high-quality tone, this guitar is truly captivating, so don't miss out on this opportunity!
