The Backenzahn is one of those rare objects that arrives fully formed, requiring nothing added and nothing removed. Philipp Mainzer conceived it as an exercise in structural candor: four identical legs in solid oak or walnut, joined with a precision that keeps each element visually distinct through a deliberate reveal at their intersections. The slightly concave seat is not an afterthought. It is a quiet acknowledgment that a stool must be sat upon, and that comfort and geometry are not opposites. The form reads differently from every angle, shifting from monolithic to airy depending on your position. What makes each Backenzahn genuinely singular is what happens during the seasoning of the wood. Solid oak and walnut develop characteristic cracks as they cure, a natural process that Mainzer embraces rather than corrects. No two stools carry the same marks. The wood's history becomes the object's identity.
