Quick Facts: Origin: Haut-Médoc, Bordeaux, France | Classification: Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel | Vintage: 2010 | Estate: Château Arnauld Production & Heritage Château Arnauld underwent a renaissance following its acquisition by new ownership in 2007, which reinvigorated vineyard management and winemaking practices. The vineyard is planted at a high density of 10,000 vines per hectare — well above the regional average — with an average vine age of 40 years. The plantings are approximately 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot, though the final blend can vary significantly by vintage, sometimes exceeding 50% Merlot. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, with malolactic conversion also completed in tank before the wine is transferred to mostly new French oak barrels for 18 months of aging prior to bottling. Tasting Notes Aroma: The nose opens with pure, fine-grained black fruit aromas followed by floral nuances and a thread of sweet spice. As the wine breathes, delicate notes of orange peel and subtle mocha emerge, adding complexity to the bouquet. Taste: The entry is generous and full, with ripe black cherry fruit immediately filling the mid-palate. The wine develops ample weight as earthy undertones and spice-box flavors build alongside a chocolaty, medium-bodied texture. Dusty, velvety tannins provide structure without harshness, keeping the dark fruit in focus throughout. Finish: The finish is chewy and persistent, with lingering floral aromatics and a gentle tannic grip. Dark fruit and cocoa-dusted notes slowly fade, leaving a distinguished, well-integrated impression. How to Drink Château Arnauld 2010 At over a decade of age, this wine is best served slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C, and benefits from 30 to 60 minutes of decanting to allow its tertiary aromas to fully unfold. Drinking it neat in a large-bowled Bordeaux glass will showcase its evolved complexity. For food-forward pairings, consider it alongside a classic Bordelaise steak, where its tannin structure and dark fruit mirror the richness of the sauce; a braised lamb shank, whose slow-cooked depth matches the wine's earthy, spiced character; or a duck confit, where the wine's fruit concentration and acidity cut through the fatty richness of the dish. It is a medium-bodied Haut-Médoc with dominant flavors of ripe black cherry, spice box, mocha, and earthy undertones, framed by velvety, well-integrated tannins. How does Château Arnauld compare to Château Chasse-Spleen? Both are respected Haut-Médoc estates situated in close proximity, but Chasse-Spleen is generally considered one of the appellation's benchmark producers and commands a higher price. Château Arnauld, classified Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, delivers comparable old-vine concentration at a more accessible tier, particularly since its quality resurgence post-2007. Is Château Arnauld 2010 good for drinking now? Yes — with over a decade of bottle age, the 2010 vintage has entered a mature drinking window where its tannins have softened and tertiary complexity has developed, making it very rewarding when decanted. Where is Château Arnauld made? Château Arnauld is located in the Haut-Médoc appellation on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, France. The estate's vineyards benefit from the classic gravelly soils and maritime climate that define this prestigious sub-region. What foods pair well with Château Arnauld 2010? Grilled lamb chops complement its earthy tannin structure; aged Comté or Gruyère echo its nutty, spiced notes; beef bourguignon mirrors the wine's dark fruit depth; duck breast with cherry sauce plays off its core black cherry flavor; and dark chocolate desserts highlight its mocha and cocoa undertones. What sizes does Château Arnauld 2010 come in? The standard release is a 750ml bottle, which is the most widely available format for this vintage. Is Château Arnauld 2010 worth the price? Château Arnauld positions as a value-oriented Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, delivering old-vine complexity, 18 months of new French oak aging, and a strong 2010 vintage at a fraction of what classified Haut-Médoc growths command — a solid proposition within the Left Bank landscape. Why Château Arnauld 2010? The 2010 vintage is widely regarded as one of Bordeaux's finest in the modern era, and Château Arnauld captured that quality at the Cru Bourgeois level. With 40-year-old vines planted at 10,000 per hectare — a density that concentrates flavor — and 18 months in predominantly new French oak, the wine punches above its classification. Its 88-point Wine Spectator score confirms its merit, and the estate's Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel status reflects sustained quality improvements since the 2007 ownership transition. For drinkers seeking a mature, terroir-expressive Haut-Médoc without the price tag of a Grand Cru Classé, this remains a compelling bottle.
