dCS Vivaldi Master Clock The Vivaldi Master Clock occupies a singular position in digital audio — a dedicated Grade 1 master clock engineered to the same standards as the professional studio equipment that dCS built its reputation on, and the component that takes an already exceptional Vivaldi system into territory that no DAC-based clocking arrangement can reach. Timing is the foundation of accurate digital audio reproduction, and the Vivaldi Master Clock addresses it with a thoroughness that is without parallel in home audio. Why a Dedicated Master Clock In any digital audio system, samples must be accurate in both level and time. Jitter — timing errors introduced into the digital signal — causes the analogue reconstruction to deviate from the original, with audible consequences that no amount of downstream processing can fully correct. dCS DACs are capable of acting as system master clock, and they do so with considerable precision. But a dedicated master clock removes the burden from the DAC entirely, supplying a reference signal of an order of accuracy that a DAC — by necessity a general-purpose component — cannot match. dCS were among the earliest pioneers of external clocking in digital audio. Their clocking technology has been developed and refined continuously since those first professional installations, and the Vivaldi Master Clock represents the current apex of that work. Phase-Locked Loop Clocking The Vivaldi Master Clock uses a multi-stage Phase-Locked Loop system — a sophisticated control architecture that not only generates an accurate clock signal but actively manages and suppresses jitter from any incoming reference source. This matters particularly when the clock is slaved to an external reference such as an atomic clock or GPS signal: the PLL system significantly reduces jitter introduced by that external source, rather than simply passing it through. The result is a clock output of greater stability and accuracy than the reference itself. The crystal oscillators used in the Vivaldi Master Clock are pre-aged, individually selected for long-term stability, and calibrated across a wide temperature range. A sophisticated microcontroller monitors and corrects for temperature variation continuously — an approach that dCS note gives more stable results than either oven-controlled crystal oscillators or atomic clocks operating without such active correction. Two Banks, Two Frequencies The Vivaldi Master Clock provides two independent banks of clock outputs, each capable of operating at a different frequency. This allows it to simultaneously serve components operating at different sample rate families — 44.1kHz-based and 48kHz-based — from a single unit, without compromise to either. All outputs are standard Word Clock on 75-ohm coaxial cable, making the Vivaldi Master Clock compatible with any third-party equipment designed to accept an industry-standard Word Clock input, not only dCS components. Updateable by Design Like every component in the Vivaldi range, the Master Clock uses dCS's programmable logic architecture — what the company refers to as their 'soft' approach. Firmware updates are applied by the user and can add new features, improve performance, or adapt the unit to changes in digital formats as they emerge. This is not an incidental convenience: it means the Vivaldi Master Clock remains current across format generations without requiring hardware modification. The Audible Result Used within a Vivaldi system — alongside the dCS Vivaldi Apex DAC, the dCS Vivaldi Upsampler, or the dCS Vivaldi CD/SACD Transport MK2 — the Master Clock produces changes that are immediate and unambiguous. Images sharpen. Low-level detail that was present but indistinct becomes clearly resolved. The music gains authority and a sense of solidity that confirms what the engineering suggests: timing, when it is truly right, transforms everything downstream of it. Those approaching dCS for the first time, or building a system at a different price point, will find the dCS Rossini Master Clock a natural companion to the dCS Rossini Apex DAC or dCS Rossini Apex Player. Who Is It For? The Vivaldi Master Clock is for the serious digital audio enthusiast who has committed to the Vivaldi platform and wants to hear what it is genuinely capable of. It is not an entry point — it is the component that completes the system. Those who have heard a Vivaldi DAC without a dedicated clock, and then with one, rarely need further persuasion. It is also a considered choice for any owner of third-party high-end digital equipment who requires a Grade 1 reference clock source and wants the best that exists in home audio. Buying from Martins Hi-Fi Martins Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968. Elizabeth Gould runs the business today, and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind. We can demonstrate the full Vivaldi system — including the Master Clock — at our Norwich showroom, and the difference it makes is one of those things that is far easier to hear than to describe. When you get in touch, you'll be speaking with Dave, Chris, and our Product Links specialists — experienced dCS specialists who can advise on this component and your whole digital system. Contact us at [email protected], call 01603 627010, or WhatsApp on 07554 687137. You can read more about how we work on our Why Martins Hi-Fi page. We are at 85–91 Ber Street, Norwich, NR1 3EY.
