Originally released August 1964 Reissued September 24, 2021 Blue Note 1xLP A question we get asked often here by jazz fans looking to delve deeper into the headier, more out-there works from names like Albert Ayler, Sun Ra or Don Cherry is how do they find a lane into understanding and appreciating these brilliant and difficult masters? A perfect place to start your journey into the often-choppy waters of the avant-garde is right here on Eric Dolphy’s masterpiece, recorded mere months before his tragic death in June, 1964. The players are a who’s who of jazz greats of the era with Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, Richard Davis and Tony Williams rounding out an untameable lineup that turns Dolphy’s loose compositions on their head and make this to be one of the most thrilling jazz albums of this time or any time.
