Gish is the debut studio album by the Smashing Pumpkins, released on 28 May 1991 through Caroline Records. Produced by Butch Vig and frontman Billy Corgan, the album was recorded at Vig's Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin between December 1990 and March 1991 on a budget of $20,000 — with the band saving money from live shows to fund the sessions. The recording took approximately 41 days, after which Corgan described the finished record as "a very spiritual album" focused on themes of pain and spiritual ascension, a sensibility reflected in song titles such as "Siva," a deliberate misspelling of the tantric concept of Shiva. Notably, Corgan played most instruments himself apart from drums, a practice that generated tension within the band but contributed to the album's densely layered sound.Sonically, Gish sits at the intersection of heavy metal, psychedelia, dream pop, and shoegaze, drawing early comparisons to Jane's Addiction for its similar fusion of hard rock and atmospheric interludes. Across its 10 tracks, the album moves between heavy, riff-driven pieces like "Siva" and "Tristessa" and more hypnotic, slow-building numbers like "Rhinoceros" — which Louder described as twisting "unhurriedly from a sweet acid ballad into a psychotropic glam vortex" — and the desert-prog atmospherics of "Suffer." Chris Mundy of Rolling Stone called it "awe-inspiring" with "meticulously calculated chaos" and a "swirling energy," while Jon Pareles of the New York Times praised its blend of "pummeling hard rock," "gentle interludes," and "psychedelic crescendos." Though it peaked at only number 195 on the Billboard 200 upon release, Gish was eventually certified platinum by the RIAA and was voted best local album by both readers and industry figures at the 1992 Chicago Musician Awards.
