Side Effect is Initio's cult classic boozy oriental, launched in 2016 and part of the house's Carnal Blends collection. The perfumer remains officially uncredited, but this has become one of the most talked-about niche fragrances in the community — a hypnotic, warm-spiced tobacco fragrance that wears close to the skin and turns heads. The opening features rum, tobacco, cinnamon, and saffron — a boozy, spice-forward introduction that feels immediately intoxicating and warm rather than sharp or medicinal. The tobacco and rum opening can be intense at first, but once it settles, saffron, cinnamon, and hedione create a perfect scent bubble. Many wearers note an almost cherry-like sweetness that emerges in the heart, though no cherry is listed in the official notes — a testament to the complexity of the blend. The base brings sandalwood and hedione, creating a soft, woody-musky foundation that gives Side Effect its signature skin-close radiance. Projection and longevity are above-average, with most reviewers reporting 8+ hours on skin and moderate sillage that stays intimate but noticeable. Community comparisons most frequently land on Kilian's Angels' Share — both are boozy, warm, and addictive, though Side Effect leans more tobacco-forward while Angels' Share emphasizes cognac and praline. If you're drawn to cozy, sensual orientals that feel confident without announcing your presence across a room, this is one of the smartest niche fragrances to sample first.
