Optimization is the act of obtaining the best result under given circumstances. In design, construction, and maintenance of any engineering system, engineers must make technological and managerial decisions to minimize either the effort or cost required or to maximize benefits. Several optimization methods have been developed for different types of problems, such as mathematical programming techniques and numerical approximations. Nonlinear Optimization: Models and Applications emphasizes process and interpretation, presents a general classification of optimization problems, addresses situations that lead to models illustrating many types of optimization problems, emphasizes model formulations, addresses a special class of problems that can be solved using only elementary calculus, and emphasizes model solution and model sensitivity analysis. Format: Hardback Length: 394 pages Publication date: 24 December 2020 Publisher: Taylor & Francis Ltd Optimization is the art of achieving the utmost result within specific constraints. In the realm of design, construction, and maintenance of engineering systems, engineers must navigate a complex web of technological and managerial choices to minimize effort, cost, or maximize benefits. While a universal solution for all optimization problems does not exist, a diverse array of methods has been developed to address diverse challenges.Mathematical programming techniques, particularly nonlinear programming techniques, play a pivotal role in optimizing solutions. Nonlinear Optimization: Models and Applications serves as a comprehensive guide, presenting the concepts in various ways to enhance understanding.Geometric interpretation is employed to reinforce the principles and facilitate a deeper comprehension of the mathematical procedures involved. The student gains insight that many problems can be analyzed, and approximate solutions can be derived before resorting to analytical techniques.Numerical approximations are introduced early on, employing algorithmic and iterative methods. Worksheets in Excel, MATLAB®, and Maple™ are provided to streamline the process.Algorithms are presented in a step-by-step format, accompanied by examples to illustrate their practical application.Nonlinear Optimization: Models and Applications emphasizes the importance of process and interpretation throughout. It offers a comprehensive classification of optimization problems, addressing scenarios that lead to models illustrating a wide range of optimization challenges.Model formulations receive significant attention, as do methods for solving a special class of problems that can be addressed using only elementary calculus.Model solution and sensitivity analysis are emphasized as crucial steps in the optimization process.About the author: Will is a passionate engineer and educator with a wealth of experience in the field of optimization.
