Quick Facts: ABV: 55.25% (110.5 proof) | Origin: Louisville, Kentucky, USA | Barrel Proof, High Rye Mashbill | Distillery: Kentucky Peerless Distilling Company Production & Heritage Kentucky Peerless Distilling Company operates in Louisville, Kentucky, reviving a brand originally established in the late 1800s. The High Rye Bourbon uses a mashbill containing more than double the rye grain of Peerless's standard bourbon recipe, processed through a sweet mash method — meaning each fermentation starts with a completely fresh yeast culture rather than reusing spent mash (sour mash). The liquid is aged in level-three char barrels that are burnt without the use of supplemental fuel, a technique the distillery credits for what critics have called a natural cleanliness rare among American whiskeys. It reaches the bottle at full barrel proof with no chill filtration, preserving the complete texture and flavor the barrel delivers. Tasting Notes Aroma: Warm seasoned oak and leather open the nose, followed by bright citrus and cedar. Dark fruit and sweet grasses develop underneath, giving the aroma genuine complexity at full proof. Taste: The entry hits with candied oak layered in toasted sugar and charred orange peel — immediately richer and spicier than a standard-mashbill bourbon. Mid-palate, a bright tea-like freshness cuts through the sweetness, while the thick mouthfeel carries substantial weight. The high rye percentage makes itself known in waves of baking spice and pepper that build steadily. Finish: Long and warming, with leather and rich tobacco anchoring the close. Sweet and earthy tones compete for dominance, leaving a layered impression that lingers well after the last sip. How to Drink Peerless High Rye At 110.5 proof, this bourbon rewards a slow neat pour — allow it a few minutes in the glass and consider a few drops of water to unlock the citrus and cedar notes hiding beneath the oak. For cocktails, the barrel-proof muscle and rye spice hold their own in full-flavored builds. A Boulevardier benefits from the charred orange character playing against Campari's bitterness. A Gold Rush lets the honey syrup amplify the candied oak while lemon mirrors the natural citrus. An Old Fashioned with a single demerara sugar cube showcases the toasted sugar notes already present in the spirit. The dominant profile centers on candied oak, toasted sugar, and charred orange, with a thick mouthfeel and bright tea-like freshness. The finish shifts to warm leather and tobacco with both sweet and earthy dimensions. How does Peerless High Rye compare to Wild Turkey Rare Breed? Both are barrel-proof Kentucky bourbons, but Peerless High Rye uses a sweet mash process and non-chill filtration, while Rare Breed blends aged stocks from a large-scale sour mash operation at a generally lower proof point. The Peerless expression tends toward more pronounced oak spice and citrus from its higher rye percentage and fuel-free char barrels. Is Peerless High Rye good for sipping neat? Yes — despite its 110.5 proof, the non-chill-filtered texture and sweet mash process produce a surprisingly approachable barrel-proof pour, though a splash of water opens up additional aromatic layers for those sensitive to high proof. Where is Peerless High Rye made? It is distilled, aged, and bottled at the Kentucky Peerless Distilling Company in Louisville, Kentucky. All production occurs on-site at their downtown Louisville facility. What foods pair well with Peerless High Rye? Smoked brisket mirrors the charred oak character; dark chocolate truffles complement the candied sweetness; aged cheddar balances the rye spice; pecan pie echoes the toasted sugar notes; and charcuterie with dried fruits ties into the leather and dark fruit aromas. What sizes does Peerless High Rye come in? The standard release is available in a 750ml bottle. Is Peerless High Rye worth the price? It positions as a premium craft bourbon, priced above mass-market barrel-proof offerings but justified by its small-batch production, unique barrel charring technique, and the weight of its 2024 IWSC World's Best Bourbon recognition — making it competitive within the upper tier of American whiskey. Why Peerless High Rye? The fuel-free level-three char barrel process is genuinely uncommon in the bourbon industry, and its influence is immediately apparent in the clean, defined oak character that avoids the muddy char notes found in many barrel-proof whiskeys. Winning the 2024 IWSC Bourbon Trophy with a 95-point Gold Outstanding score placed this craft release in direct competition with established heritage brands — and it came out on top. The sweet mash method and doubled rye content create a flavor profile distinct enough that it doesn't simply slot into the "another barrel proof bourbon" category. For drinkers chasing specificity over brand legacy, this is one of the more precisely built bourbons coming out of Louisville.
