Plant Profile This is the dark variant of the Skeleton King AKA Dark Achilles. This Bucephalandra is well-titled as the true King of all Buce! This striking aquarium plant features large, thick leaves with prominently raised veins that create a dark, skeletal appearance as they sprout upward from a thick base rhizome. It is a moderately sized plant and forms a compact rosette with leaves held slightly upward and outward, creating the bold look this variety is known for. Highly versatile, it can be grown submerged or emersed, though it is important to note that many hobbyists report leaf melt while transitioning to submerged conditions. This is an exquisite choice for the midground or background of freshwater aquascapes, where its slow-growing rhizomes will gradually produce new leaves to form a majestic focal point. Key Features & Notes The thick foliage is characterized by heavily embossed veining, giving the plant a prehistoric and architectural look that is unmatched by other species. Unlike the standard Green Skeleton King, this variety matures into a deep, dark charcoal color palette. New growth typically displays a deep pink to reddish hue, which slowly darkens into a metallic, near-black tone as the leaf matures. Due to its rarity and moderate care requirements, this plant is a top-tier collector's item for experienced aquascapers looking for a centerpiece epiphyte. Prepare for minor leaf melt when first submerged; maintain stable water parameters and high oxygen levels to help the plant acclimate. Care & Planting Instructions Prep the plant by removing it from the pot and clearing all rockwool from the roots. Bucephalandra is an epiphytic plant that should be attached to rocks or driftwood using aquarium-safe glue or thread; never bury the horizontal rhizome in substrate, as this will cause the plant to rot and melt. Avoid making drastic changes to your water parameters or lighting because unstable conditions are the primary cause of leaf melt in new specimens. While this plant is hardy once established, CO2 injection and regular liquid fertilizing will yield much faster growth and richer color density. Final size and coloration depend entirely on your specific aquarium conditions; please note that photos are a representation, and individual plants may vary. Why is my Bucephalandra melting? Bucephalandra melt can occur after changes in water chemistry, temperature, or lighting. If the rhizome remains firm, keep it attached to hardscape while the plant acclimates and produces new submerged growth. 2. Can I plant Bucephalandra in substrate? Bucephalandra is an epiphyte, so never bury its rhizome in substrate. Attach it to driftwood or rocks, or wedge the roots into hardscape while keeping the rhizome exposed. 3. Is Bucephalandra ‘Dark Skeleton King’ beginner-friendly? While hardy once established, Bucephalandra ‘Dark Skeleton King’ requires stable water parameters and higher lighting/CO₂ to acclimate smoothly, making it best suited for hobbyists with some experience.
