Plant Profile Süsswassertang is a moss-t fascinating anomaly in the aquascaping world! While it is often grouped with aquarium mosses due to its easy-care nature, it is actually the evolutionary gametophyte stage of a climbing fern. Visually, it looks like a beautiful cross between a flat liverwort, a freshwater seaweed (spoiler: its name is a German translation of this), and a classic moss, forming translucent, bright green ribbons with broadly rounded lobes. Because it develops these wide, flat fronds rather than thin needles, it provides an incredible amount of surface area for biofilm to colonize. This massive surface area makes it a premium, all-day buffet and grazing ground for dwarf shrimp, while giving tiny newborn fish fry a highly secure, shaded labyrinth to hide in. Key Features & Benefits Flat, ribbon-like foliage absorbs nutrients efficiently to help improve overall water clarity and quality. Broad, rounded fronds maximize surface area for essential biofilm growth that dwarf shrimp love grazing on. Rootless and ultra-versatile, growing as a free-floating cushion or anchored to hardscape. Care & Planting Instructions Let it float freely as a tumbling green cushion, wedge it tightly into hardscape gaps, or secure it to rocks and driftwood using thread or aquarium glue until it naturally grips the surface. Maintain a stable aquarium environment and avoid sudden, drastic changes to your water parameters to keep your plant looking vibrant and healthy. Give the plant an occasional light haircut with sharp aquascaping shears to keep its shape neat, compact, and perfectly balanced. Propagate your patch in seconds by cutting or pulling a small clump apart and anchoring it to a new surface in your tank. Add CO2 injection if you want to accelerate growth and unlock the most intense, eye-popping green coloration possible. Quick Facts Listed information should be treated as general guidelines only. How do I keep my Subwassertang from turning brown or yellow? Subwassertang prefers clean, moving water and cooler temperatures (under 78°F). Browning usually occurs when organic debris gets trapped inside the dense, ribbon-like fronds or when water chemistry swings abruptly. Gently siphoning debris out during water changes will keep the inner growth green and healthy. 2. How do I anchor Subwassertang to rocks or driftwood since it has no roots? Because Subwassertang is a rootless fern gametophyte, it will not grow true roots into substrate. You can anchor it using fishing line, dark cotton thread, or a few small dabs of cyanoacrylate superglue gel onto dry hardscape until it forms a dense, self-weighted cushion. 3. How do I stop plant trimmings from spreading everywhere during maintenance? Always turn off your filter pumps and powerheads before trimming Subwassertang. Use sharp curved shears to make clean cuts, and immediately scoop or siphon out floating cuttings so they don't take root in unwanted areas of your aquarium.
