Genuine Thorens Replacement Headshells at Vinyl Sound Buffalo, NY USA Genuine Thorens Replacement Headshells are official OEM accessories from Thorens (Lahr, Germany), available at Vinyl Sound in Buffalo, NY, USA. Designed as precision-fit original parts for the full range of Thorens tonearms and turntables, these headshells ensure perfect electrical conductivity, exact weight matching, and flawless aesthetic integration with the tonearm they are designed for. Four variants are available, each matched to a specific Thorens tonearm family: the TP 92 HS for the TP 92 tonearm, the TP 71/72 HS for the TD 201, TD 202, and TD 402 DD, the Premium Line HS for reference-level turntables including the TD 124 DD, TD 403 DD, TD 1500, and the TP 124, TP 150, and TP 160 tonearms, and the TD 204 HS for the TD 204 and its TP 120 tonearm. Most variants use the universal SME-style bayonet connector for straightforward installation and alignment. Why a Genuine OEM Headshell Matters A headshell is not a passive mechanical bracket. Its mass is a direct parameter in the tonearm resonance frequency equation: headshell weight combines with cartridge weight and the tonearm's effective mass to determine where the tonearm-cartridge system resonates, which should fall between 8 and 12 Hz for optimal performance. A headshell with incorrect mass shifts this resonance out of range, degrading bass performance, increasing susceptibility to warped records, and potentially causing the cartridge to mistrack. Genuine Thorens headshells are spec'd to exact mass tolerances for the tonearms they are designed for, preserving the resonance behavior that Thorens engineered into each system. The electrical contacts are also manufactured to precise conductivity standards, ensuring that the cartridge's delicate signal is transferred to the tonearm wiring without added resistance or intermittent contact. Four Variants for the Complete Thorens Tonearm Range The TP 92 HS is the dedicated replacement for the TP 92 tonearm, which equips a wide range of Thorens models across their catalog history. The TP 71/72 HS serves the popular entry-to-mid-level tonearms used on the TD 201, TD 202, and TD 402 DD. The Premium Line headshell is the high-mass, robustly engineered variant for Thorens' reference turntables and premium tonearms: the TP 124 on the TD 124 DD, the TP 150 on the TD 1500 and TD 403 DD, and the TP 160 on the TD 1600 and TD 1601. Its higher mass is matched to the heavier counterweight capacity of these arms, which accommodate cartridges up to 30 grams. The TD 204 HS serves the TD 204 and its specific TP 120 tonearm geometry. Key Features Genuine OEM Parts: Official Thorens original equipment for exact mass, geometry, and electrical specification matching. Perfect Resonance Preservation: Exact weight tolerances maintain the tonearm resonance frequency within the optimal 8 to 12 Hz range for each tonearm platform. Precision Electrical Contacts: Factory-spec conductivity for clean, reliable signal transfer from cartridge pins to tonearm wiring. Universal SME Bayonet Connector: Most variants use the standard SME-style connector for straightforward, tool-free installation and cartridge swapping. Four Variants for Full Tonearm Coverage: TP 92 HS, TP 71/72 HS, Premium Line HS (for TD 124 DD, TD 403 DD, TD 1500, TP 124, TP 150, TP 160), and TD 204 HS. Cartridge Swap Convenience: Keep a second headshell pre-mounted with an alternate cartridge for quick, alignment-free switching between MM and MC, or mono and stereo. Genuine Thorens Replacement Headshells are official OEM parts from Thorens, precisely matched in mass and electrical specification to specific Thorens tonearms. Four variants are available: TP 92 HS, TP 71/72 HS, Premium Line HS for reference tonearms including the TP 124, TP 150, and TP 160, and TD 204 HS. They are available at Vinyl Sound in Buffalo, NY, USA. Why should I use a genuine Thorens headshell rather than a universal aftermarket headshell? Universal aftermarket headshells vary widely in mass from 6 to over 12 grams, and many do not specify their mass precisely. An incorrect headshell mass shifts the tonearm resonance frequency out of the optimal 8 to 12 Hz window, which can produce bass bloom, increased susceptibility to record warp, and degraded cartridge tracking. A genuine Thorens headshell is mass-spec'd for its specific tonearm, preserving the resonance frequency Thorens designed into the system. For cartridge enthusiasts who want to experiment with specific aftermarket headshells for aesthetic or alignment reasons, this is a valid approach, but the OEM headshell remains the reference specification part. Can I use the Premium Line headshell with a standard SME-connector tonearm from another brand? The Premium Line headshell uses the standard SME bayonet connector and will physically attach to any tonearm using the same standard. However, the headshell's mass is specifically matched to the counterweight capacity and resonance target of the TP 124, TP 150, and TP 160 tonearms. Using it on a significantly lighter or heavier tonearm may require adjustments to confirm the resulting tonearm-cartridge resonance frequency remains within the optimal range for the specific cartridge being used. Is keeping a second headshell a worthwhile investment? Yes, for listeners who use more than one cartridge. A second headshell pre-mounted with a different cartridge, for example a mono cartridge for mono pressings or an MC cartridge for critical listening, allows instantaneous switching between setups without re-alignment. Because the cartridge is pre-mounted and aligned on the headshell rather than on the tonearm itself, each cartridge retains its overhang and azimuth settings from session to session. This is particularly practical with the SME bayonet connector, which allows headshell changes in seconds without tools. Which headshell variant do I need for the Thorens TD 1500 with TP 150? The Premium Line headshell is the correct OEM part for the TD 1500 and its TP 150 tonearm, as well as for the TD 403 DD (TP 150), TD 124 DD (TP 124), TD 1600 (TP 160), and TD 1601 (TP 160). Select the Premium Line HS variant from the drop-down menu. If you are unsure which variant matches your specific Thorens model, Vinyl Sound in Buffalo, NY, can confirm the correct part before purchase.
