Eastern white cedar serves as a resilient evergreen foundation for windbreaks, privacy screens, and long-term landscape structure. We offer this species as bareroot stock, suitable for planting during late fall and early spring dormancy windows. This format allows for cost-effective establishment of larger hedgerows or restoration projects. Thuja occidentalis is a genetically diverse species and the wild parent of many ornamental arborvitae cultivars. While often selected for formal landscaping, the straight species maintains the robust traits necessary for varied environments. The foliage is notably rich in vitamin C, surpassing even citrus fruits in concentration. This tree thrives in moist, well-drained soil but demonstrates remarkable adaptability to clay, wet sites, and proximity to black walnut trees. It performs best in full sun to partial shade, though foliage may thin in deep shade or brown in highly exposed, windy locations. Growers should be aware that deer browse can be significant, so protection is recommended in areas with heavy pressure. Mature specimens can reach 40–60 ft in height with a spread of 10–15 ft. Choosing bareroot stock ensures you are starting with vigorous, dormant plants ready to acclimate to your specific site conditions. While heavy snow or ice can occasionally cause breakage, the species is incredibly long-lived, with some wild specimens recorded at over 1,300 years old. Successful establishment requires consistent moisture and protection from browsing wildlife.
