How to Use Write Now—the Getty-Dubay Italic Handwriting Program for Adults (3rd edition) Write Now is the adult version of the Getty-Dubay italic handwriting method—the same method taught in Books A through G of the student series, condensed into a single self-paced book for adults who want to improve their handwriting. The full course runs 96 pages and covers basic italic, cursive italic, and edge-pen italic. The premise of italic—and of Write Now—is that most adults who hate their handwriting were taught a system that doesn't hold up under speed. Traditional looped cursive asks the hand to make movements it doesn't naturally want to make, which is why so much adult handwriting devolves into illegible scrawl the moment you stop concentrating. Italic is built on slightly sloped, elliptical letterforms that follow the natural rhythm of the hand, with basic and cursive sharing the same shapes. The result is handwriting that stays legible at speed. A few details worth knowing: the entire book is handwritten, so every page demonstrates the method in practice. The edge-pen Italic section at the end teaches the calligraphic version of the method—optional, yet relevant if you want to extend italic into formal lettering. And the book includes instructions for a more ergonomic pen and pencil hold, if hand cramps are part of why your current handwriting falls apart. This is a self-guided course that you can work through at your own pace. Write Now is a good fit for an adult who wants to overhaul their handwriting from the ground up, or who's teaching italic to a child and wants to learn the method themselves.
